Author Spotlight: Gayle Donnelly and Robyn Mackenzie
April 28, 2012 by Limecello
Hi friends! A pleasant surprise for us all! Double the fun with double the authors! Please welcome Gayle Donnelly, and Robyn Mackenzie! I’m especially pleased because they interviewed themselves! This sick, and sleep deprived Lime can’t tell you how grateful she is about it. Se’s even speaking in third person! I’ll stop now. (But really – aren’t they adorable?!) Don’t miss the giveaway at the end!
As readers ourselves, there are always certain questions we want to ask authors when we meet them or read a blog with an interview. What we would like to do today with Limecello, is answer those questions for you. We hope you enjoy our story and hope to see you at Authors After Dark!
- How did you get into writing?
We are both English majors and always enjoyed writing in college. Once life started getting in the way of enjoying reading (both of us are married with two children and have full time jobs) we fell out of it. Believe it or not, like so many readers, Stephanie Meyer’s Twilight Saga brought us both back to reading. Since then, we are never without a book and probably go through 3-4 a week each.
One afternoon, we were sitting outside by the pool, kids splashing and playing and we started talking about a book that we both mutually did not care for (and yes, we will leave the name of the book out!). We couldn’t understand how it had gotten published with so many errors both plot as well as grammar. Robyn looked over at me and said, “You know, we could do this!” And basically…that was it.
We came up with a story line and went with it. I did an outline and we then proceeded to meet at Starbucks every Sunday morning. It was “our” time and we loved it. It took almost two years but we finished Infinite Betrayal and took it with us to Lori Foster’s Reader/Writer event in 2010. We pitched to Liquid Silver Books and they took it. We were very lucky!
- What is the most important aspect of your writing?
Honestly, we just think about what we would want to read about. It HAS to include Alpha males and great sex but most importantly…the STORY has to be there. One great piece of advice we received was “If you like the story without the sex scenes, then the story isn’t just based on sex.” Those are the stories we like. Solid plot lines, good characters, and meaningful relationships. Once we get that, the sex is just a bonus! And a good one too!
- What is the writing process when there are two writers involved?
Well, everyone is different but for Robyn and I, we take each storyline that we come up with and determine “ownership”. In Infinite Betrayal, Mina and Mathias were Mine from minute one. Once we developed that story, Robyn immediately owned Chloe and Talon. The “owner” of the characters comes up with the outline of the story and begins the writing process. The writing partner then comes in with suggestions, corrections, enhancements, and editing.
There are several times when we don’t agree with each other in where a story goes and when that happens, we are close enough to each other to accept honest feedback and really step back and take a look at the story as a whole. As long as we remain TRUE to the original story we have created, we pretty much listen to each other and remain open to constructive as well as positive feedback.
- Do you read reviews of your book(s)? What did you think of them?
Not usually unless we have sent our work to the reviewer. For review and blog sites we have solicited for reviews, we usually comment on them as well. Thanking the bloggers and reviewer for the attention given to Infinite Betrayal. We truly appreciate everyone’s opinion and if they loved our story, we are soooo very thankful for it. But if they didn’t, everyone is entitled to say what they believe and in our eyes, our story just wasn’t for them.
Really, any review is pretty good in our minds because it means our story reached a reader. Honestly, we were extremely pleased with the reviews of our story and were shocked to have been nominated as one of the best Indie Paranormal novels of 2011 by Romantic Times. For us, that was a HUGE deal!!
- Who are some of your favorite authors?
We are pretty much the same on this one: JR Ward, Larissa Ione, Lora Leigh’s Nauti Boys, Shannon Stacey, Jill Shalvis, Sherrilyn Kenyon’s Dark Hunters, Jaci Burton, Shelly Laurenston, Karen Marie Moning’s Highlander series, Erin McCarthy’s Fast Track series….we could go on and on!!!
- What do you want to get out of attending Authors After Dark? Why this conference?
Well, first of all, paranormal work is our favorite genre and we wanted to go to a con that was dedicated to it. Second…it’s taking place in the paranormal capital of the US! New Orleans is one of our favorite places to visit and we haven’t been in about a year. We cannot wait to be back in the Big Easy! Third and finally, we want to meet all of the readers and authors in the genre. We have so much in common and we felt that this was the one conference to meet some wonderful readers and incredibly talented authors….all while enjoying the city of spirits (both alcoholic as well as paranormal!)
- What’s coming next from you both?
Well, Infinite Surrender; Book 2 of the Infinity series is in the final editing phase and we hope to have that out soon. Book 3/Infinite Desire has been outlined and we will begin the writing process as soon as Surrender is out. Desire will have Tremayne as the main character. We are both also working on independent projects and hope to be publishes with single works as well.
Thank you so much Limecello for having us and we would like to give away an E-copy of Infinite Betrayal to one of your commenters. See you at AAD!!!

AAD Author Spotlight: Interview with Gayle Donnelly and Robyn Mackenzie plus giveaway
For my sixteenth (and seventeenth) AAD Spotlight, I introduce Gayle Donnelly and Robyn Mackenzie!
Questions about AAD: Have you attended Authors After Dark before or are you an AAD virgin like me?
Gayle: Total ADD Virgins!! But we are so very happy that this year’s get together is in New Orleans! It’s one of our favorite places!
What are you most looking forward to at AAD2012?
Gayle: For me, I am looking forward to so many things. First of all, I love the idea that Robyn and I will finally get some “girl time” together. It’s rare for us to actually have time to ourselves with family and a full time job on top of writing, much less have time with each other. This will be a wonderful opportunity for us to relax and enjoy ourselves. Second, I haven’t been to New Orleans in over a year and that’s too damn long for me! I gotta get my Nola fix! And finally, the opportunity to see other fantastic writers and readers from all over is going to be a blast!
Robyn: I’m definitely ready for a get-away with my best bud but I’m also looking forward to meeting so many wonderful writers and fantastic readers! I’m literally counting down the days!
Which author(s) attending AAD2012 are you most looking forward to meeting/seeing?
Gayle: Jeaniene Frost, Shayla Black, Cynthia Eden, Dakota Cassidy, Trinity Blacio, Pamela Palmer, Delilah Devlin, and sooo many others!
Robyn: Erin McCarthy, Dakota Cassidy, Cynthia Eden, Shayla Black and the list goes on!!!
Questions about your WRITING and READING HABITS: What did you do when you found out you were being published for the first time?
Gayle: I was at home at the time and my parents were visiting. I found out via email so I immediately started jumping up and down, screaming. My mother came out of the bedroom and just stared at me. I was screaming, “I got a contract! I got a contract!” I immediately called Robyn at work and she had to keep it together while driving the very long 2.5 miles to my house from the office. When she got to my house, I launched myself at her and we cried!
Robyn: When Gayle called me at work, she literally scared me to death. I couldn’t understand a word she was saying because she was crying so hard. When she finally calmed down enough to actually speak, I lost it myself and had to run into a conference room (where I proceeded to cry like a baby right along with her!). Without saying a word to anyone, I grabbed my keys and ran out to my car. I think I literally made it to Gayle’s house in under two minutes. Needless to say, I didn’t make it back to work that day .
Of all of the books you’ve written, which is your favorite?
Just the one (Infinite Betrayal) but we think Infinite Surrender will surpass it!
Have you ever written a scene that made you blush?
Gayle: I haven’t blushed when writing one but I did blush reading an incredibly hot motorcycle scene that Robyn wrote! You’ll have to wait until the release of Infinite Surrender to read it yourself!
Robyn: Uhhh…yep…the motorcycle scene in book 2, Infinite Surrender (cheeks are a bit red just thinking about it).
Who was your favorite hero or heroine to write?
Gayle: I loved writing Mina. Her character is so close to my heart that it was hard not to get too personal with her. But I can say, Tre was a blast!
Robyn: Hands-down, Chloe.
Who is your favorite hero or heroine to read?
Gayle: Of ours, Mina. Another author, Wrath (BDB) – The Blind King is mine!
Robyn: Of ours, Talon. Another author, Wrath (BDB) – We might have to fight over that one girlfriend!
Have you ever been surprised by a reader’s reaction to a scene that you wrote – either good or bad?
Gayle & Robyn: Well, the abduction scene in Infinite Betrayal was not taken too well by some folks. I can completely understand when a reader is uncomfortable with a violent scene but it was one that needed to be told. Honestly, it was more graphic initially than what was published but Robyn and I decided to tone it down and after the reviews, we were glad we did.
Have you always been a reader or are you like me and got turned off by the mind-numbingly boring deep and multi-layered books you had to read in High School only to ‘find’ reading again as an adult?
Gayle: I have to admit, I found reading again as an adult after reading the Twilight Saga. After that, I feel naked if I don’t have a book in my hands. I usually go through 2-3 books a week.
Robyn: I was the same. I read vehemently growing up then got busy with other things and gradually got away from it. I think I’m making up for lost time though now as I can’t seem to get enough!
What book do you most remember having read in High School?
Gayle: To Kill a Mockingbird
Robyn: Probably A Tale of Two Cities but I also read a lot of Poe.
Questions about YOU: What is your favorite movie?
Gayle: Wizard of Oz
Robyn: Too many to name only one and I’m very eclectic in my tastes (Platoon, Star Wars…the original, Gone With The Wind, The Ten Commandments, Titanic, etc. , etc. , etc.)
What is your favorite flavor of ice cream?
Gayle: Mint Chip
Robyn: Blue Bell Chocolate
Are you a morning person or a night owl?
Gayle: Total Night Owl
Robyn: Definite night owl
Tell us something people might be surprised to learn about you?
Gayle: Um…when I normally answer this question, I say I’m a published author. But I guess the one thing I can say is I’ve never traveled out of the United States.
Robyn: I’m a very introverted and private person…until you get to know me then watch out J
Question about your UPCOMING RELEASE(S): Who came up to whom and originally suggested working on a series together? Gayle to Robyn? Robyn to Gayle?
Gayle: Robyn…you tell it!
Robyn: Robyn to Gayle. We were sitting out by her pool one weekend (having a cocktail or two) discussing a recent book we had both just read. The book, which will forever remain unnamed, didn’t really appeal to either of us. I turned to Gayle and said, “You know, we could do this. We love a good story, we both love to write, we were both English Education majors, why not give it a try?” After she got over the initial shock, Gayle jumped on board and we started talking story ideas right then.
The series you are currently working on together is the Infinity series. Tell us about this trilogy.
Robyn: The trilogy introduces the reader to a race of shape shifters known as the Coteri. Their race has lived amongst humans for centuries, acting as protectors, but their true natures have remained hidden. The story follows the lives of the Coteri as they fight to maintain the secret of their race and protect human society from their mortal enemy, the Valta. A splintered faction of the Coteri, the Valta want to extend dominance over the weaker human species and they don’t care how many they hurt or kill in the process. As the war between the Coteri and the Valta escalates, so does the heat between several of the main characters.
The second book, Infinite Surrender, is releasing soon! What can readers expect from this latest installment?
Robyn: Lots of action, a growing understanding of several of the main characters that appeared in the first book, scorching hot sex scenes, and the introduction of some new characters that are sure to capture the reader’s attention and hopefully make them want book three!
Thank you both so much for taking the time to do this interview today. AAD NOLA will be so much fun!
